Step 1) Be a Good Role Model - Boys emulate their fathers. So if you tell your son not to be lazy, not to do drugs, etc., but you do those things yourself, you're being a poor role model. You need to be a model for your son by example. You need to live what you preach.
Step 2) Make your son accountable to his commitments - If your son sets a goal, has a plan, but continually comes up short of his goals, he needs to be talked to harshly. It's one thing when a boy is trying his hardest and comes up short...it's another thing entirely when laziness prevents him from fulfilling his commitments. You'll be able to tell the difference.

Step 3) Ensure that he does the right things - habit builds character. This goes hand-in-hand with step 1 being a good role model. If your son starts developing bad habits, you need to help him rectify those from the beginning; otherwise, he could be so entrenched in his bad habits that he's never able to disunion himself from them.
It's important today more than ever that we as men teach our boys how to be real men. We live in a time - especially in the United States--when it has become lowly for men to make excuses, and ask for bailouts for inexcusable behavior. Adequate is Adequate of this. Times are hard, no doubt, but the worst think a man can do is concede to his own self doubt. To keep fighting the fighting regardless of whether you win or lose should be the mantra of real men worldwide.
